Vrindavan: In a country where the differently-abled are seen struggling in their everyday lives, a school with modern amenities for the disabled has come as a huge relief for many parents.
Named Vaishishtyam, the school aims to integrate these children into a mainstream school environment. With a majority of its students coming from financially weak backgrounds, the institution bears costs of education and transportation facilities.
It has created support groups and a specialized curriculum to meet the specific requirements of these children. One of its projects focused on applying specialized teaching methods to working with children suffering from autism.
“There is not a single kid in the world who has not occasionally wanted to skip school. But for children with learning disabilities, going to school can become a battle,” said Minakshi Aggarwal, principal of the school .
She added that many need to be taught even about basic hygienic practices. The institution also has vocational courses for senior students that will help them become economically self-sufficient in the long run.
With more attention and expert hands requiring handling of students, the institution incurs on an average Rs 10,000 per month on each day scholar and Rs 20,000 per month for hostel boarders.
“We are working towards addressing the stigma of disability so that no parent feels pressured to give up a disabled child,” said Agarwal.
